Our Mission

Thank you, and welcome to the Northstar Irish Wolfhound Club Website. We invite you to explore our club and join us in celebrating the Irish Wolfhound. There is much to know about our stellar hounds!

Northstar is a club seeking a diverse membership that embraces the health, welfare and future of the Irish Wolfhound in a caring community. We are more than proud of the quality of our annual Specialties and applaud those humans and hounds who make our shows extraordinary. However, we are equally proud and committed to members who seek opportunities to gather and enjoy wolfhound camaraderie whether at a group walk, a local festival or at a pub crawl. Our hounds shine in public, ideal ambassadors for the breed.

The Club’s focus is a happy, healthy hound-human relationship in any activity. As we reflect on why we have Irish Wolfhounds, let us recall the purest reason of all, for the joy in their company.

“My own interpretation of the breed standard, is of a powerful, flexible sighthound, capable of speed, arched strong neck, powerful jaws. Great width both across the hindquarters and through the first and second thighs. I also want a front construction that will support the great weight of the front of the hound when at full gallop. Fit to function. This on well boned legs, strong hocks at the back , slight spring of pastern at the front. Good feet, neither cat nor hare, sitting fully on the ground. The overall picture should be of strength, beauty and curves.”

“The Irish Wolfhound has changed my life. You see them, and you’re never the same. And you’re less and less the same as time goes by. It’s the only thing I’ve ever been involved with that I know about where I have loved them more and more. They have been a lot of work, I know, and they are really a lot of trouble. They’re also an enormous amount of pain. But, there is nothing like being with those dogs! I just can’t imagine my life without them.”
