Thank you so much for the invitation, it was a great pleasure to judge your Wolfhounds. My thanks also go to Jamie, David and Marilyn for the perfect organization of the ring and to Tim for the kind hospitality and assistance during the four days.
My general impression of the dogs is very positive and almost all the exhibits displayed excellent temperaments, being friendly to people and other dogs. The type and the general conformation are of high standard compared to Europe. I found that the 99% of the bites were correct and all the exhibits moved soundly.
I sincerely thank all the exhibitors who brought their young dogs for my appraisal.

Pre Critique Address to Club and Competitors

Thank you to Northstar for the invitation to judge, we were so well looked after. Particular thanks goes to Tim Guderian for his chauffeuring and the entertaining. A very big thank you to my wonderful Steward on the day, Jamie Germaine, who tried to keep me on track. To all the exhibitors showed under me, thank you. It is always a great privilege to go over the hounds that the breeders/owners have devoted so much of their life. Although cold, the weather could have been worse, it could have rained.
My preamble will give you my overall impressions, what I was looking for, what I found, good and not so good. All judges/breeders have their Particular preferences, it’s always interesting to have a peek inside their head and see what they’re thinking My overall impression was great strength of quality in the bitches and this bodes well for the future of the breed. They were, of course, excellent quality males, but we need more from different lines. Worldwide there are not as many people keeping male Wolfhound. Breeding and rearing, sound typical males is quite an undertaking, but I do feel, as a breed, we need to at least keep and run on some of the young dogs that we breed, there must be good brothers to the very beautiful bitches in the ring.
My own interpretation of the breed standard, is of a powerful, flexible sighthound, capable of speed, arched strong neck, powerful jaws. Great width both across the hindquarters and through the first and second thighs. I also want a front construction that will support the great weight on the front of the hound when at full gallop. Fit to function. This on well boned legs, strong hocks at the back , slight spring of pastern at the front. Good feet, neither cat nor hare, sitting fully on the ground. The overall picture should be of strength, beauty and curves. I found beautiful shapes, with an arch over the loin, something we seem to be losing of late. Dark eyes, although the shape and placement was not always correct. The majority of hounds had the most beautiful rosed ears. Something we could do with on the other side of the pond. Most hounds had coarse wiry coats of correct length with undercoat. Long heavy tails, most carried correctly. Most hounds had good muscling on both the upper and lower thigh of hind legs. Hind movement was, in general, clean. I had heard several reports about the terrible mouths in dogs in the US so I was prepared for anything. What a pleasant surprise, large teeth, and for the most part correct bites. There were of course a few mouths that were incorrect and a handful mouths with dirty teeth, but for the most part, there really was not too much of a problem.
For me, the most common problem was front construction, mostly upper arms. Many scapula had correct layback, some with short, fat muscles, incorrect in a sight hound and giving an appearance of lumpiness at the withers. In my opinion, the upper arm should lay back from the point of shoulder so that the elbow is laying at the bottom of the side of the chest, touching the chest. This gives the hound the best support and the ability to reach forward. If the upper arm is straight, with a gap between elbow and rib cage, there is usually a problem further down the front leg, with straight pasterns or knuckling over at the wrist/carpal joint, often accompanied with flat or twisted feet. Fronts are difficult to get right. As the old breeders used to say, the hardest thing to breed , the easiest thing to lose.
Last, but not least, my view on temperaments.
The Irish wolfhound is a sight hound, and sight hounds can be aloof, independent and disregarding of human beings. The breed standard does not give a direct interpretation of temperament, but it does say that they should have commanding appearance. This is a hound content in its own skin, head held high, surveying the world. It is quite depressing as a judge, to have a beautiful hound in front of you but not to be able to touch it, and to my mind, a calm, commanding demeanour, is an integral part of breed type.

Cato-Goodell Seven month old, and a rich shade of red. A very leggy young man, as he should be at this age, with excellent bone and feet. Correct planes to the head and a beautiful expression with dark pigmentation and shading. His ears are a little ungainly at the moment. Well developed body giving him plenty to grow into. Today he looked better standing than moving. So often the case at this stage.

2nd. Prairie Creek Dubhghall. Mari, Wolfe and Smalley Brindle pup in excellent coat. At the moment, a little more stocky then the winner. Has an excellent strong body, correct head planes, with strong muzzle and beautifully held ears. Going through a growth phrase where his lost angulation at both ends this affected his movement.

Excellent coat texture.well boned body. At the moment he has completely outgrown himself and having trouble with his very long legs, this effected his movement.

Long legs. Commanding appearance .At the moment unbalanced, a lot of rear angulation to deal with, but stilted in his front construction which was making him knuckle over. I look forward to see how he grows into his huge frame.

Very Similar in make, with a beautiful correct head, expression and pigmentation, excellent ear carriage. Preferred the front construction of Charka, but regardless, Cipher moved very soundly.
